I finally got my hands on DVDs of the original OAV that depicted the final chapter of the third saga. It's a little aged, but it seems to be better than the prequel in aesthetics. I've always been a little curious about things like that. One aspect that strikes me is how the original anime adaptation seems to stay truer to the manga. In the prequel they seemed to minimize the civilian casualties and toned down the violence (then again, the prequel was made more for explaining the past than anything else).
Intense battles have always been more my thing, and I'm pretty satisfied with the anime. Heh, one of the most hair raising fights didn't have a single punch thrown.

No, you may be thinking of Dio Brando, who is an enemy. The hero has black hair and a black jacket with a red shirt and junk.
I've never watched it or read the manga, personally. Heat says he tried to read it once, but found that he didn't like it.

I foudn it funky as all hell. Really off-beat, and it could definitely be one of the most memorable manga I've read in recent times. Although I haven't seen the OAV... meh. I rarely find that the animes are better than the manga.

The individualist art stlye and focus on using logic rather than whipping out some new strength out their ass to defeat enemies tends to turn some people off.
One thing that the original OAV is lacking is that is starts off near the final chapter in Egypt. Otherwise, it's a decent adaptation as they go.
I like the manga, it's like a Bond movie with pyschics.

Reminds me of the first Bond movie. If I recall, it involved aliens. But yeah, I find it almost unsettling how I find that your above point could be true. Have I really become so accustomed to overpowered characters that I think an original story is off-beat..?
