It was pure luck that I found this manga in the section Books-A-Million has for their more adult manga, which is on the other side of the store, and by the Romance section. While I never played SMT: if... I knew enough about the series (and the backstory was elaborated on plenty within), so I don't think my enjoyment was diminished any.
In short, it tells the story of two students who went to hell and back because of the Demon Summoning Program. When the return they try to stay under the radar, but remain on alert for those who will want to use the newly formed link between the human and demon worlds for their own mad agendas.
The first volume pretty much just sets things up, but plenty of gory and brutal stuff happens to keep things interesting. The games shoot for the M rating regardless of the content in order to appeal to more mature audiences, but the manga certainly has earned its rating. Anyone who objects to lesbian molestation should probably skip this series.
I like that in the back of the book is a brief glossery which elaborates on some of the info about the game which the manga is a continuation of. I'm hoping that this manga stays true to some of the core elements of SMT, rather than just using a few items tacked onto a generic story. That said, it's a must have for any SMT enthusiast who can handle... certain content.
By the way, KAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHN ;D
