Should governments censor material on the world wide web?
The internet is the fastest growing and largest tool for mass communication and information distribution in the world. It can be used to distribute large amounts of information anywhere in the world at a minimal cost. In the last ten years there has been increasing concern about damaging internet content from violence and sexual content to bomb-making instructions, terrorist activity and child pornography. Even if moral arguments surrounding internet censorship can be justified there remain practical problems with the regulation of such an international concept.

Well this alot going on around the internet, especially Myspace and Youtube, full of pornstars, chain letters, trolls, money makers, and even spammers. I think they should censor those bad stuff. That is my opinion.

Likely....yes?
I'm in favor of censorship, as long as they DO censor the BAD stuff only. Damaging internet content - there are already numerous content around the Internet in which many teenagers secretly visit.. >.> Though I doubt that the government will possibly detect all of them just to get rid of them. But really, they should. As all those website owners make money out of their website too, yet they use their sites for evil!
I find it funny that when censorship is applied, so many individuals react negatively because for them, censorship is like limiting their freedom, which is true. They are being limited to browse what they want over the Internet. But what they want sometimes are mostly inappropriate for younger ages yet they enjoy viewing those for pleasure. Bah! Screw those folks! Internet is for general use, and everything around the Net should be as clean as possible.

Hell NO! They don't have the authority to do it, the right to do it, or the integrity to do it right! It's impossible for just the "bad stuff" to be censored, it only stifles free speach and creates an environment of paranoia in which normal business is tainted by the fear that anything said could be interpreted as something "offensive."
The internet is already full of elitist perverts, do we really want our elected (and in certain parts of the world unelected) officials (the ultimate elitist perverts) controlling the net? Unlike the trolls and smut distributers, the government is allowed to use force to get their way.
The internet is one of the few places that potshots can be taken at those in power and still be relatively safe. The religious mafia known as the Church of Scientology is exposed on the internet and even then the whistle blowers face danger. Imagine if those criminals had the power of government, or people in the government are engaged in equally criminal behavior.
Which is the more noxious, to be unnerved by crap put on the internet or the violation of our liberties and basic right to THINK?
The internet is part of the media, and the media MUST REMAIN FREE!

No way, jose. Censorship is already something that's really running rampant through the media, and it's not even for any good reason. Songs on the radio are now censoring the first part of "Goddammit" because it supposedly offends the religious crowd. Horse sh*t, I say. Also, censoring the word "hole", but not the word "ass"? It's not even making sence anymore!
If they move onto the internet, then all hell will break loose. Not only will harmful material be censored, but just about anything that the censoring companies just happen to not like may be censored as well. It's just not fair.
