Should everyone speak and be taught the same language? What language should it be?
Since the demise of Latin in the 15th century the world has lacked an official language of communication. The EU has two working languages (French and English) while the UN has six (French, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, English and Spanish). Many have since argued that it would be easier and contribute to global harmony if we could agree on one standard language. In fact L. L. Zamenhof created Esperanto specifically for this purpose at the end of the 19th century. However since then many have viewed English as a de-facto global language with local dialects like Singlish being spoken in many corners of the globes. The advance of English is resisted within many cultures who see language as an essential component of identity as well as a key tool for accessing the history and literatures of individual peoples.

I have mixed feelings about this issue, I'm very much for a national language but an international standard I'm wary of. Bilingual countries are by default compromised and cater to separatist groups within the borders. The imposition of an international language is something I'm not too cool about.
Free trade is good, and the more the better. However, to impose a single language would go against the soveriegnty of other nations. I think that it's possible to conduct free trade without the imposition.

I'd say it would keep interpreters employed, furthermore some people need to have a few good secrets.

If you ask me, I believe that we should have a central and global form of communication, such as English, to give everyone a break. However, English should NOT become some form of uni-language that would threaten to destroy other languages, and therefore reducing the culture of other nations. Other languages should be practiced and spoken, but a central language for, say, businesses and politics, should be settled on so that general information can be hearded around the world as needed without confusion.
