Well, here in San Diego, we have the biggest zoo in the world. The animals have pleanty of space to roam around in and live quite a pampered life. You never really go by a cage and think, man, that animal looks MISERABLE. Also, the zoo does quite a bit of research into the well-being of the animals, breeding endangered ones and all that. We even have some animals here that are extinct in the wild.
I believe that if animals are to be kept in captivity, they should have proper living standards. Not sitting in cages the size of closets, barely attended to, simply for profit.

Sorry for the unprofessionalism, but what the hell is it about these damn hippies and trying to corrupt my childhood? While there have been bad zoos, when done right there is nothing more pure and decent. It gives people a chance to see animals that they otherwise could never see, or at least not safely in the wild. Zoos inspire the imagination and open eyes to what a big world we live in. Jesus, dood.

Well I don't know if this discussion was over, but I would like to share my opinions too. XD;;
Keeping animals in zoos.. Not bad as long as the keepers of the zoo will also provide proper treatment to the living things - so that the creatures would also experience a life that was similar from where they were raised from the beginning.
And besides, having zoos is a great way for children to see the animals with their own young eyes and that they can witness the true presence of these magnificent creatures, not just from books, television, and Internet alone.
Bringing the nature closer to you and especially, to the curious minds of the children. But remember, these zookeepers must do their job of keeping the animals healthy just like from their natural habitat.
.............Or else I'll sue them owners, lol! >:3

Let me add one more thing, without zoos, there are some animals which would have been extinct years ago. The simple fact is that many third world countries are in such a bad circumstance (for internal and external reasons), that the rare animals will just get eaten by the locals. I don't like it, but these are the facts that we have to face if we really do care about animal welfare and that whole biodiversity thing.
