Kurtis sat, as he often did, in his lab. He spent the majority of his time there, even when he had nothing to do. He made the basement into a lab not only because of the convenience of having a home laboratory, but because in his youth, he always saw the basement as his own secret lair. For being a big basement, the lab itself was small. It only consisted of a work bench, a large desk with several computers on it, and a larger table, which was mainly for drawing up huge blueprints. The rest of the space was filled with random gadgets he'd made. Among the gadgets were several small robots, which were shut off at the moment. Perhaps they were an attempt to fill a void.
His time spent upstairs was often short, as if he were avoiding going upstairs. He only went upstairs to clean--if necessary--and to lay on the couch to recharge. Never did he do so in his bed. On occasion, he even opted to use the cellar door to leave the house rather than through the front door. No, upstairs reminded him of his family life, which was tragically cut short. Even five years later, not a day went by that he didn't think of them.
He met Lenore in college. Kurtis mainly focused on the sciences and his robotics classes while Lenore majored in sociology. Those closest to them thought they were rushing their relationship, that they didn't have enough in common to make a marriage work. Despite this, they were married soon after Lenore graduated.
Due to his advanced robotic designs, Kurtis was immediately accepted into the World Research Facility. The facility provided a community for its researchers, which solved their house-hunting problems. Every house in the community had a pool, which was good for Lenore because soon after they had moved in, she was with child. Kurtis couldn't have been happier.
He felt like he was on top of the world. A family, a beautiful home, and soon he would be picked up by the Earth Defense Force to make robots that would defend humanity.
But it didn't last long. Terrorists against development in space destroyed the World Research Facility and the surrounding community, killing hundreds of brilliant minds and their loved ones. Kurtis was heavily injured and gave up survival after realizing that his wife and daughter were dead. But the EDF wouldn't let him die. They used his blueprints to "save" him and make him into a cyborg.
For a time, he was upset at the EDF for not allowing him to rest, but he soon focused his rage on Gordon for not being there to stop the terrorists. He lost his focus on his robotics and instead wanted to prove that Gordon wasn't worthy of holding the title of Defender of Earth.
Though, secretly, Gordon's bravery had been the reason that Kurtis wanted to join the EDF. But he didn't want to admit that.
Still, he sat in his lab, doing nothing. Not even thinking. Maybe he was waiting. He was snapped out of his trance when a message flashed onto one of his computers. It gave details about Jennifer being kidnapped. Kurtis knew Gordon would already be on his way, so he stood and left through the cellar door, taking off as soon as he was outside.
