Okay you little barbarians (you know who you are), don't be too squemish about watching a documentary. Technically, this is a "narrative... something or the other" but it's pretty much a documentary. Many critics have derided Scarface on the grounds that it was too over the top and preposterous, but the truth is that it was toned down to be believable! This movie touched the tip of the iceberg of the cocaine wars which ravaged south Florida and Miami in particular. With the proper balance of information and flair, one gets a faint understanding of how crazy the times were.
For the bulk of the movie, the focus is on a group of smugglers who brought cocaine into Florida for the cartel and their experiences during the time. The personal anecdotes and the tricks they used to elude the authorities are amazing, and the excesses which occurred are shocking. In an interview with an assassin for the cartel, he talks about the murders he committed the way a 14 year old talks about the neat stuff he did in GTA. And Griselda Blanco, holy crap, those who doubt that a powerful villainess could come from a male dominated culture will get a nasty dose of reality as they learn about that crazy bitch.
The movie itself is solid, but incomplete. However, the makers did their best cramming in deleted scenes and a featurette about Griselda's boyfriend. Love them or hate them, the commentary track for this movie was very informative as they filled in the gaps as best they could and elaborated on different aspects of the times. A must see for anybody who likes a good crime story.
