Me and my friends have been wanting to get into D&D, we have all the books and enough miniatures. We've made our characters and played the intro game, but we're stumped on two things. What do we do about traveling and sleep and such, and how does the passage of time proceed in D&D?

traveling varies by the DM. Some like to just say "You're there!" and be done with it, while some make random encounter tables to note the realism that you might be attacked by something in a fantasy setting. Some DMs, in certain situations, even call for elaborate survival skill check grids to see if you can even find the correct way through certain environments. Really, it's just different depending on who's DMing and how elaborate they want to make a trip. I believe the PHB has the rules for sleep in it, but if I'm not mistaken, you regain your level in HP for an 8 hour rest (or 4 hours for elves). You're much better off saving a few healing spells for before you rest than relying on that for healing. There's also the fact that spellcasters need a full night rest to regain their spells (or, once again, 4 hours for elves) As for the passage of time... one combat round = 6 seconds... that's just about the only concrete rule on time. Once again, the DM can make this variable, but most just have time go at normal speed with real life until you: get into combat, stop to discuss something you're about to do, or do things that take extended periods of literally doing nothing (sleep, travel, etc.). Some DMs insist that time continue while people are discussing plans, however, so you might want to be careful about developing that plan to get out of the room with the slowly collapsing ceiling also, you misspelled the abbreviation for Metal Gear Solid 2 in your sig

Some friends of mine and I have also just gotten into D&D and we use the rule that time passes in the game world as it does in rl except we play that each battle round is 6 seconds regardless of what goes on. Since we are new we take time to find our attacks.
