Bella Lugosi, when he was sickly and addicted to pain killers, is still far more badass than the vampires of Twilight. And let me not get into how retarded those psyvamps are, "feeding off emotions?" Those are just called A-holes.
From what I heard, the Twilight books read like a slash fiction.

Bela Lugosi was incredible. He was handed something he completely did not want to do (play villains, he actually wanted to play a sort of foreign hero, almost kind of like James Bond) and excelled, and enjoyed himself. Bela Lugosi (Not Bela Lugosi as Dracula) could backhand any vampire from Twilight to death. If just Bela Lugosi could do -that-, Dracula could commit sparkle-bright vampire genocide.
And it does. It was recommended to me by a friend (who knew I had an interest for good horror and maccabre fiction), telling me it was all about vampires warring with each other and had the dark imagery I so loved. I was sorely dissapointed. The characters are stock Mary Sues and Marty Stus, and the whole thing just reeks of exaggerated teenage angst. The descriptions and the like were well-written, but, over all, it read like Anne Rice, only, with sparkle-bright vampires and even -more- annoying characters.
Vampires should -only- feed on blood. Not emotions, not souls, those are for ghosts, wraiths, and demons. I mean, honestly.

Though I must say, the souls eatting thing would be pretty cool if done right. :P On another note, I've heard from one of my friends (I use the word "friend" lightly since she likes to avoid all human contact at all costs. >_>. Don't ask) that the leading girl in the story is just a smaller and younger author. Essentially a self-insert with harem quantities, if you will. Also, I saw a part of the movie (the first half). I must say, the most interesting character in what I saw was the guy in the wheelchair with the cowboy hat. That's pretty sad considering what the story was supposed to be about. <.< Done without spell check. :P

Soul devouring can be cool, I really liked how it was used in LoK. Especially with the plot twist about the soul devouring entity in the Reaver.
Ah yes, the classic self-insertion method, a very famous Mary Sue-type. Granted, from what I've heard, James Bond in the novels was essentially Ian Fleming, the author. Then again, that guy was actually cool and had a history of being badass. It's normal for something of the author to manifest in main characters. Lovecraft's leading men where typically bookish and worldly people, much like the author himself.
The trick is to not identify with the main character as you write it. A modicum of detachment is needed to write characters effectively.

Admittedly, Legacy of Cain soul-devouring was great, but, Raziel was a wraith or a wight or something along those lines, no longer a "true" vampire. Plus, the Elder God can break whatever rules of vampirism he wants. XD;
And Lovecraft is badarse.
Unlike sparkle-bright vampires.
